Poetry | Empathy

invisible threads held me to you today
every now and then I’d glimpse your face
and they would carry your pain to me

as a string telephone carries your words
unraveling near the end, frayed strands
flung your ache into my heart.

I felt hunger for health
a quenching thirst for healing
a need to carry your pain as my own

my empathy nearly undid me
I felt the pain wreck me
leaving a tear upon my cheek
and a soreness in my throat

together we sit in agony
you in the bed, me in the chair
I try to make you laugh

my maturity is in disarray
a cold breeze travels by
and I grip the blanket tightly

threads pull taut and my hand
grips my throat of its own accord
pain lashing through my body

sympathy pain
a supplement to love
